Definition
If you are reading this online, then you are using the Internet. "Internet" describes a massive world-wide network of computers. The word literally means a "network of networks", and is made up of smaller regional networks scattered though-out the world. On a given day, it connects around 20 million users in approx. 50 countries.

So its an international community of people who share information and communicate. For the user, the internet is a vast collection of resources - people, information and multimedia.  <Back to What is the internet>

History

The birth of the internet is linked to the cold war. It was the answer to the problem of how to communicate in the aftermath of a nuclear attack. What was needed was a communication network in grid form so that there would always be more than a single line of communication.

This idea grew into what we today know as the Internet.  <Back to What is the internet>

WWW

The World Wide Web (WWW) is mostly used on the Internet, but they are not the same thing. The Web refers to information, whereas the internet refers to the physical network of cables and computers. The WWW uses the Internet to send documents between computers users internationally.

As in the case of the Internet, no one body owns the WWW. People are responsible for the documents they author and make available publicly on the web.  <Back to What is the internet>

 So, what's this E-mail

It takes days to send a letter around the country and weeks sometimes to go around the world. To save time and money more people turn to electronic mail. Its fast, its easy and its cheaper than the post office, allowing you to quickly and easily communicate with millions of people around the world any time of the day or night, for the cost of a local telephone call.

So, in simple terms, e-mail is an electronic message sent from one computer to another. You can send or receive personal and business -related messages together with attachments, which could include documents, pictures or even computer programs.  <Back to What is the internet>

I’m on the Internet - Now What ?

The Internet is where you go to get information, but you need to Search for the stuff you need.

There are two ways to do this; either you put in the URL in the location bar (this is when you know the exact site address), or you start searching, using one of the search engines

Here, at Eureka Online our range extends to incorporate many of the value added services associated with life on the Internet. <Back to What is the internet>

* How do I change my E-mail password
* Error getting network address for axil.eureka.lk
* E-mail with a very large attachment starts downloading then gets stuck.
* Timed Out! in the middle of trying to download a mail?
* Bar appears saying "Connecting to mail server" but no mail gets downloaded
* Temporarily close my account, because I am going overseas

*Q.Why do I frequently disconnect

A.This could be due to a number of reasons. The most common being: the telephone line disconnecting between you and Eureka at any point along the connection, a faulty modem, due to "noise" , technically termed cross talk, and on rare occasions due to problems in our systems.  <Back to FAQ>

* Q.Why do I get a busy tone, if as the marketing guys say, you have plenty of lines and Eureka never gets congested.

A.We have Three hunting numbers hunting on clusters of lines. When you dial a particular number if all the lines assigned to that cluster are engaged then you will get a busy tone.

The following could also be reasons:

The hunting facility is provided by Sri Lanka telecom, and therefore if there is a problem with

the telecom-exchange the hunting facility might get out of order.

At the same time when a telephone line (at Eureka end) belonging to particular hunting group is faulty it gives a busy tone even when the line is free.<Back to FAQ>

*Q. Sometimes I hear the modem dial and ring but does not get connected.

A.This is probably due to the fact that one of the two modems either yours or the modem at the server end) which is trying to connect is faulty.  <Back to FAQ>

*Q.Why do I get connected but cannot access any the browsers ?

A.Browser is a software in the customer’s machine ( Netscape or Internet Explorer - often). If the software cannot be run by the customer the indication is that the software is faulty and will need to be re-installed.  Back to FAQ>

*Q.What are the lines connecting to 33.6 ?

A.100% of our lines are 33.6.  <Back to FAQ>

*Q.How is it that Eureka claims a connection speed of 33.6, when lines go only up to 14.4 ?

A.This greatly depends on the geographical location. Depending on the number of exchanges and the types of exchanges the speed will change. However most exchanges have now turned digital and they don't have a 14.4 limitation.  <Back to FAQ>

* Q.Why do I get the message "Error getting network address for axil.eureka.lk".

A.You may not be properly connected to the Eureka server. Check your telephone connection and try connecting through the manual method explained above.  <Back to FAQ>

  * Q.What do I do if an e-mail with a very large attachment starts downloading then gets stuck ?

A.Firstly SMTP and POP3 protocols which handles email was not designed for large file transfers (Internet provides a different protocol for large file transfers call FTP ) The attachment facility is used in the case of non text information but only for small files (say less than 100 Kbytes). Mails sent with huge attachments might not even reach the destination because an intermediate mail server might have a maximum size of the mails that they accept. However if you receive any mails with big attachments and in the middle of the downloading process it gets cut off, don't try to check mail immediately because to reset your account it might takes about 4-5 minutes after abnormal cut off. Dial out entirely wait a few minutes and try re-dialing again. However if this problem occurs time and again please get in touch with the technical division and we can delete the mail at your request.  <Back to FAQ>

* Q.What does it mean when a message appears saying Timed Out ! in the middle of trying to download a mail?

A.Usually you get this message when there are large mails with attachments to be downloaded.

All email programs have a time period within which it will expect to download email from our system. Unfortunately this time period already set can not be changed with most e-mail programs. This time period allows for time enough to download normal emails.  <Back to FAQ>

* Q.Why do I sometimes get connected and then get stuck, i.e.: a bar appears saying Connecting to mail server but no mail gets downloaded?

A.This could be for several reasons including : the modem could be a faulty one, or there could be something wrong with the email program or with the operating system itself.  <Back to FAQ>

*Q.What happens to my mail if I decide to temporarily close my account, because I am going overseas ?

A.When we close an account temporarily for any reason (this is generally for a short period of time) the e-mail account is not affected. You are still in a position to send out e-mails under this address and also receive under this e-mail address. <Back to FAQ>

* Q.If I need any changes done who do I contact?

A.Changes could be varied, including a change of package, login names, passwords or an e-mail address changed. All such changes will need to be e-mailed to the Manager Customer Relations.

E-mail address to be sent to : mcr@eureka.lk  <Back to FAQ>

* Q.What software will Eureka install for us ?

A.Trumpet Winsock - as the dialing software

Netscape Ver. 3.x - as the internet software

Eudora Light - as the e-mail software <Back to FAQ>
