Alawathura Menike"Lady from the Alawathura village", now 61 years old, came to MEF in March 2001. She was kept as a safari elephant for five years and then returned to work in the timber yard. She had a multitude of problems including foot rot, digestive problems due to poor care from her temporary mahouts and several wounds on her body. She now receives "round the clock" attention from our well trained mahouts and feels at home with the other elephants.

LakshmiLakshmi meaning goddess is a "30 something!" with tons of energy and a passion for fizzy drinks. She likes to spend her time caressing her daughter "Pooja". She is the strongest elephant at the Millennium Elephant Foundation and to help spend some of her energy she is occasionally taken to the forest to collect kitul for the other elephants to eat. Although this work is hard, her mahout is compassionate and on her return from her working she is completely pampered by him.

PoojaLakshmi's daughter, was the first elephant born to a domesticated elephant in Sri Lanka. Although "Pooja" is in her teens she is still considered by all at the Millennium Elephant Foundation to be the baby. She was born here on the 5th of August 1984, weighing 64kg and 51cm tall. Her father was a working elephant named Kandula who sadly died in an accident. Like all teenagers Pooja has a willful disposition and enjoys splashing about in the river and generally getting a lot of attention from her mahout and the other elephants.

RaniRani is a playful 23 year old who came to MEF last year when Rani's owner found that it had become too difficult to look after her. Her name means "queen", a woman of high power, and is a perfect fit given her tall and elegant stature. Her long legs lift her up to a staggering height of 9 feet making her one of the tallest elephants at MEF. For this reason and given that she is the only elephant who sways form side to side in an exaggerated manner Rani is easily identified. Rani enjoys the company of both people (particularly ladies) and Pooja.
