CONNECTION

EMAIL

GENERAL

SAFETY TIPS

CONNECTION

Why do I frequently disconnected ?

This could be due to a number of reasons. The most common being: the telephone line disconnecting between you and Eureka at any point along the connection, a problem in the telephone exchange, a faulty modem, due to "noise" , (technically termed cross talk,) and on rare occasions due to problems in our systems.

If this happens continuously it will help if you change the dial up number or inserting DNS to the Dialup ( Please refer Eureka User Manual for Instruction on Setting up DNS Link). This will solve the problem if it is due to the telephone exchange.

How is it that. Eureka claims a connection speed of 56, when lines go only up to 14.4 ?

This greatly depends on the geographical location. Depending on the number of exchanges and types of exchange the speed will change. However exchanges have now improved and they don't have a 14.4 limitation.

^ Top

The connection doesn't dial, though the phone lines working properly

This could be due to the incompatibility of the modems with the phone lines. Try changing the "Dialling Properties" from tone to pulse dialling

Why do I get Access denied because username and/or password is invalid on the domain.

This error can occur if you use a bad username or password; remember in most instances the password is case-sensitive - you will not see the password, so if CAPS LOCK is not the way you expect it, you may have a problem with upper/lower-case.

This error may also occur even if you have entered the correct username and password if your Windows networking settings are incorrect. Make sure that 'Log on to Network' is not checked in you

Why do I get error NO DIAL TONE?

The most obvious cause is that you've neglected to plug your telephone line into your modem. Double check to make sure. Additionally, the telephone cable may be bad, test it on a regular telephone.

A common problem is plugging your telephone line into the wrong jack on your modem. Many modems have two jacks, one for the telephone line and one for a telephone handset.. Double check to make sure.

Another common problem is that some other device on the same telephone line (e.g., a telephone answering machine) is off the hook. Double check to make sure that all other devices are on the hook.

There may be a problem on your telephone line. Make sure that you can get a dial tone on a telephone handset connected to and through your modem when the modem (or computer in the case of an internal modem) is turned off.

EMAIL

Why does email sent to me not arrive?

There are three common reasons why you might not be getting an email that someone is sending to you.

First, check your Mail Controls to make sure you are not blocking the person (or blocking everyone). If you are, the person trying to send you email should be receiving an error message saying that you are not accepting mail from them.

Second, check your Spam Folder to see if messages from your correspondent are being tagged by ETP as being junk email. If they are, try adding your correspondent to your Address Book so that future messages will be delivered straight to you.

Error getting network address for smtp.eureka.lk.

When attempting to access email without an active connection and the Auto Dial feature is not enabled. To enable this, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and select the Connection tab and tick the "Connect using this connection" check box

While accessing mail message appears ."Mailbox is blocked by another POP3 Session"

Due to the limited Bandwidth and phone line speed, it is not always possible to download larger attachments. This would be possible only at a point where the server is not at peak processing. In the worst case scenario the appropriate mail could be deleted from the server without effecting the other mails .

Why do I get error “0x800CCC0e - The connection to the server has failed.
0x800CCC0d - The host 'pop2.eureka.lk' could not be found. “

The usual cause of this error is a missing or damaged folders.dbx file. Either that or it is using a read only attribute.

Make sure that your email account is correctly configured and the server names are exactly correct. Disable all firewalls and any other security software you have installed to determine if that is the problem. If that helps, you will need to reconfigure your firewall to allow Outlook Express to operate properly. if you are still getting this error message, try reinstalling TCP/IP

When email with a very large attachment is being downloaded and get stuck/ disconnected or displays the "Times Out!" Message.

Due to the limited Bandwidth and phone line speed, it is not always possible to download larger attachments. This would be possible only at a point where the server is not at peak processing. In the worst case scenario the appropriate mail could be deleted from the server without effecting the other mails.

Bar appears saying ."Connecting to Mail server" but no mail is downloaded

This could be due to various reasons. They are, > Incorrect SMTP server settings > Incorrect DNS entries > If the "Specify an IP Address" is selected.

^ Top

While accessing email, a message appears " Error opening script file C:\eureka\eudora\serial.mod file"

This is due to incorrect "Connection Method" setting in Eudora software. Eureka mail servers are configured as "Winsock" as the connection method and not as "Dialup/Shell Account Access"

This program has performed as illegal operation and will shut down

This message appears due to the appropriate software corruption. It should be re-installed to solve the problem.

Why does email I send to other people not arrive?

ETP will make every effort to deliver a message to your recipient, but does not have any control over a message once it leaves the ETP service. If your recipient is not with ETP, have check with their provider in an effort to figure out what happened to your message.

If you are receiving some type of error message in response to your email look to it carefully for an explanation for what happened. Your recipient might have changed their address or you might be spelling it wrong.

Why do I get an Error “ Mail box Locked by a nother POP3 Session” ?

A POP lock is a mailbox lock. A POP lock error means that the mail server thinks that you are sti ll connected to the server so it will not allow you to make any further connections to it.

This error usually occurs if you have not disconnected properly from a previous session, for example if you turned your modem off before disconnecting from the server, or if your connection drops out while you are retrieving your email from the server.

Usually the mailbox lock will be removed if you wait about 10 - 15 Min

Why do I get error “ The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server

Make sure you are connected to the Internet at the time the error occurs.Double-check the recipient address. If there are several emails in your outbox, or if there is a large one, try removing some of them.

Try sending an a test email to yourself. If you still get the error, make sure your email account settings are correct. The reply to address should be your full email address. Try reconfiguring your email account. ( Refer Eureka Manual for Setting )

Why does mail I send have the wrong date/time stamp on it ?

ETP uses your computer's clock when sending mail. You have to make sure your computer has the correct time and date, if you want your email to be correct.

  • Windows
Go to the Date/Time Control Panel set the correct time and date. Then choose the Time Zone tab, and set the appropriate time zone for your location. If the information is already correct, change it and then change it back.
  • Macintosh
Go to the Map Control Panel (OS 9 only) and select your city or the city closest to your location. Then go to the Date & Time Control Panel and set the correct time and date (and time zone in OS X). If you are using Mac OS 8.5 or later, you can use an Internet time server to automatically set the time for you.

How do I stop getting junk email (spam)?

The first step to avoid junk email on ETP is to enable its Spam Filter service. This tags messages ETP believes are junk that could be transfer to Trash Folder or Deleted from Server ( Not applicable for Eudora uses) with filters applied for tagged Spam mail.

Why am I receiving MAILER-DAEMON bounces from messages I didn't send?

It is a common feature of the many email viruses currently populating the Internet to forge their identities and send themselves out to every email address (and everything that even looks like an email address) that it can find -- in order to insure maximum infection. Viruses get these email addresses from a variety of sources, including an infected person's address book and their email/browser cache.

If an infected computer has any trace of your email address on it, there is now a chance that the virus will mail itself to a third party using your address as the Sender. If that third-party email address doesn't actually exist, or if there are virus protections in place, the message will be rejected and will bounce back -- to you -- even though you are not infected with a virus.

It's still a good idea to keep your virus software and definitions up to date, so that you don't get infected ,but just because you are receiving bounces doesn't mean you actually sent the original message. In fact, it's almost a sure sign that you didn't.

Some junk email/spam is also sent in this manner to avoid detection -- with randomized sender addresses. You might even get an angry reply from someone who thinks you sent them the junk email, even though you didn't.

What is a Spyware ?

Spyware is software that downloads to your computer without your knowledge. This software can download to your computer in many ways including, the download of the information from a webpage, downloading any program from websites (especially games), and using software sharing programs such as music sharing (KaZaA) just to name a few.

Spyware software is designed to gather information from you and your computer. It will watch what webpages you visit, what you send in your e-mail, or even sometimes your e-mail address, or even worse find your passwords and credit card information. Much of this information is then gathered by the creator of the software and either used to market products to you, or even sell the information to other companies. Spyware will also have some other adverse effects that can be very annoying. Some are designed to change your homepage to take you first to the page of their choice, usually to try and make you buy something from the site they direct you towards. Many spyware designers are paid by the sites they take you to by the number of people that are redirected to their site. Spyware will also find your e-mail addresses so that they can sell that e-mail address to spammers so that you will receive many annoying advertisement e-mails. Some spyware will also cause popup windows to come up when browsing the internet, and sometimes even when you are not even connected to the internet. In the worst case scenario the spyware may cause your web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) to not work at all, or worse yet even crash the whole computer.

So far there is no proven method to block spyware from downloading to your computer. The best way to help protect yourself against spyware is to download a spyware removing program that will search your computer, find the software and remove i

What is Adware ?

Adware is similar to spyware in that it is software that is downloaded to your computer. It is different from spyware in that you download the software usually with other programs that you download, such as KaZaA, Gator, Ncase, and even web browser toolbars. The software "watches" what webpages you visit on the internet and places advertisements within their software which is related to the webpages that you have visited. Most often it will tell you in the privacy policy that you are downloading this adware, which is part of the software that you were originally downloading. Some adware will tell you that it will take your information and sell it to others, usually for spamming or other advertising and marketing purposes. After the adware software gathers the information from your computer it will then report back to the creator of the software where you have been. Then while using the original software that you downloaded it will then advertise products that are related to where you have visited on the internet in hope that you will purchase that product..

What is a computer Virus?

A virus is a program, which reproduces its own code by attacking other programs in such a way that the virus code is executed. The virus does this without the permission or knowledge of the user. There are several ways to get a computer infected by a virus. Depending on the type of virus and the files it attacks, the consequences will be different. In general, viruses need a host to infect. Computers and programs are the ideal support for virus attacks. The potential of viruses is to destroy software, modify programs, delete files etc. This all happens at the same time as the virus spreads itself. The end result is that you are no longer in control of your computer. Every time you boot your computer or execute a program, the virus will be executing and spreading too.

SAFETY TIPS

  • Never give your credit card, bank account and other personal information to unknown websites.
  • Don’t give your email address to sites that offer free photos, music, etc… Remember, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. If you must give an email address, create a Yahoo or Hotmail address and use it exclusively for this purpose.
  • Always keep an adult near children using the Internet. If this is difficult, use parental software Eg:- NetNanny™.
  • Update your antivirus software at least once a week. It’s a safe idea to update your antivirus software before downloading your e-mail.
  • The content on the Internet is not, and cannot be, governed. Let common sense be your guide. If an offer seems too good to be true, it always is.
