About People Summit 2003

The People Summit is a gathering of South Asian civil society groups that seeks to address and formulate agendas of action for problems faced by the people of the South Asian region. With its vision of eradicating poverty, preventing human rights violations, promoting good governance and people centered, sustainable development, the summit provides:

• concerned groups a platform to voice their concerns

• share successful strategies of action

• strengthen one another through mutual regional cooperation

At the 3rd People Summit 2003 we hope all these strengths will help us find solutions to our respective problems and induce changes at a global level. The People’s Agenda formulated during the summit is presented at the governmental meetings of the SAARC Summit.

Since the SAARC Summit of 2003 has been postponed, the convening of concerned parties at the People Summit is made all that more crucial in formulating a strong People’s Agenda for the SAARC Summit that will take place later in the year.

Who is it for?

The summit is open to all concerned individuals, students, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community based organizations (CBOs), trade unions, women’s movements, issue based networks and civil society organizations (CSOs) in South Asia. In the ensuing exchange of ideas, we hope to build a strong agenda for action that will push for positive change in the South Asian region.

The power to make this change lies in your willingness to share and learn. We call on you all, individuals and organizations, big or small, to be a part of this great democratic process.
