TOWARDS HUMAN SECURITY IN SOUTH ASIA
 

In a secure world people would possess the right to preserve their own life and health and live in a sustainable environment, access to employment and resources, be free from discrimination based on age, gender, ethnicity or social status, be guaranteed the right to political participation, representation and access to justice and protection from abuse. In the South Asian region, political instability, internal conflicts, under-development and the negative impact of globalization have stood in the way of the people and their right to secure environment.

SAP-I’s human security approach is based in the peace-building and conflict resolution dimensions the issue. Following its mandate as a provider of space for regional collaboration and sharing, capacity building of civil society networks and advocacy and research, SAP-I’s Toward Human Security in South Asia Program aims to:

• Understand community perception of human security and the lack of it. And its linkages to gender, poverty and vulnerability with emphasis on women and children who are most affected by conflict situations.

• Provide opportunities for civil society groups and stakeholders in South Asia to recognize emerging non-traditional issues in security discourse in South Asia and to address the problems of proliferation of small arms and conflicts in South Asian region.

• Document peace building community coping strategies and mechanism which could be a role model to communities with special emphasis on vulnerable groups of women & children who face a situation of insecurity owing to several factors including small arms proliferation in the region by dialogue among stakeholders. To plan Humanitarian Strategy to Combat proliferation of Small Arms Problem in South Asia.

• Harmonize national legislation on small arms to implement UN Program of Action.

• Influence National Governments and SAARC to draft Regional Convention to Prevent the Illicit Proliferation, Circulation and Trafficking of Small Arms and Light Weapons .

• Build capacity of working groups with a gender focus to influence and monitor Government on implementations of UN Program of Action on Small Arms & Light Weapons.

• Increase Awareness building and capacity building of both Governments and CSOs with emphasis on rights of women & children.
